Before naming your baby, consider checking your favorite domain name registrar to see if the proposed name has already been registered.

Register a Domain Name for your Baby

Soon to be parents are increasingly internet savvy and understand the value of online identity for personal and business use. Rather than risk their child’s domain name being already registered when they are ready to use it 15 or twenty years from now, they are acting pre-emptively and choosing names that are available from the .com domain registry.

For example, the Castillo family is expecting a baby boy. From their list of potential baby names they have decided on “Justin” or “Jack” for his first name. However a quick check at Godaddy.com reveals that JustinCastillo.com has already been taken but JackCastillo.com is available. Congratulations JackCastillo.com, Godaddy has just approved your name!

Uses for your Baby’s Domain Name

And now that your baby has been named after an officially registered .com domain he is entitled to create a lifelong website. Baby pictures, personal and family history, email address, contact information. Eventually his website could expand into resumes, transcripts, and employment history – behind password protected directories of course.

The benefits for registering a dot com domain name for your baby are life long. If your baby should grow into a business of his own, Jack Castillo Enterprises, JackCastillo.com may be the logical domain name to use. Unique and well branded after a couple decades of use.

Baby Domain Name Privacy Concerns

Once you register a domain name for your baby, the address and contact details for the domain name are available to the public. To help insure privacy, many domain name registrars offer domain proxy services so that the registrant’s information is hidden.

Do I recommend registering a domain name for your baby? Yes, very much so. The value of a domain name only increases with use. Having your name dot com as your point of contact throughout your life is not only a great convenience, it also makes excellent business sense.

Variations of Domain Names to Register

If your child's domain name is already taken, do not despair.  There are a number of alternative domains to register.  You can choose to use a TLD other than a dot com.  For example .net, .org, .info, or even the .name suffixes are often available.  The United States has the .US domains and each country has its own.

Some people find they can get by with a hypen between the first and last names of the domain.  For example amanda-castillo.com.  One advantage to this method of doman name selection is that the terms "Amanda" and "Castillo" are separated and therefor may be counted as two separate words by the search engine.  This could help the search engine optimization of the website associated with this domain name.

This makes me think there is a market for domain names beyond last names.  I wonder what the value of domain names using common names might be?
